We’ve decided to train at Clovelly Beach for this year’s Balmoral 1km Swim and Balmoral 2km Swim.
We chose to move to Clovelly because it offers an experience that’s safer and more accessible, a perfect training ground for first-time open water swimmers.
1. It is a sheltered, narrow beach.
Clovelly Beach is about 60m wide and about 350m long. It’s landlocked on either side with a concrete promenade, accessible by steps into the water at various points, making it more like a large ocean pool than a beach – perfect for first-time open water swimmers!
2. There is no ‘surf zone’ to navigate.
Clovelly Beach is locked between two ridges that extend like comforting arms toward the sea. Very little wave energy makes it into the bay, making Clovelly Beach the calmest and quietest patrolled beach in Sydney. The best part – there are no crashing waves when entering or exiting from the shore!
3. It has loads of parking and public transport.
There is a large free car park on the southern side of the beach, and free on-street car parking available. There are also lots of accessible public transport options that take you directly to the beach from across the Eastern Suburbs and the Inner West. Check available transport options using Google Maps.
4. It has a surf club metres away from the water.
Clovelly SLSC is located adjacent to the carpark on the southern headland, with the concrete concourse either side of the water making it easy to patrol the length of the water. The beach is patrolled between September and April by Randwick City Lifeguards and volunteer Surf Life Savers.
5. It has a live camera showing local conditions.
Having difficulty picturing what the beach is like? Check out the real-time feed of beach conditions via Randwick City Council’s Clovelly Beach Live Camera below!
